Someone asked for Record shops with mail order service.
I suppose Pet Sounds and Hot Stuff, that were mentioned, are quite nice.
But they are both usually a bit expensive.
I would try Bengans (http://www.bengans.se/) and Skivhugget
(http://www.skivhugget.se/ (only in Swedish though)) first.

Subject: From Scan to Brazil
I'm totally new to your list. It's actually my first day in the list. I
discovered the joys of the scan-indie thru Cardigans, of course. Then I
bought The Wannadies and Stina Nordenstam (not really indie) and I just
can't get enough.
I publish a Brazilian music magazine called Virus (we already did a
Cardigans piece) and I would like to know if someone in the list can
write a piece about this scene for us in Brazil.

Yummy! Do you mean that they played all the three new songs, as well as
other new songs? I can't wait to hear the demo, and I know it should be
on its way here now too... my mailbox is under constant observation :-)
By the way, what is this I hear about All Stars snatching Cucumber Farmer
member Mikko? Manu can't be very happy about this development...

Hell, I'd love to hear this tape! I've only heard some of them before, and
would like to hear the rest as well. And I bet I'm not the only one either,
so if you want, and have the time, I vote: make a tape chain for it!

Aquadays - are back! They have made three new songs during the holidays, and
will play at the Goteborg Film Festival at Folkets Hus,
"Kinski Bar", "Jarnet" on February 4th at midnight (00:00)!

Dorian Records - latest compilation "True To You" is here! The first few copies
arrive next week, which means that the participating groups
will have their copies within a week after that. It will take
another week or two before you will be able to find it in the
record stores. In case you missed previous news about it,
take a look at previous Selected News columns.

Dorian Records - again (a first for the Selected News!): The next, and third
compilation is scheduled for release late March. No name has
been decided for it yet, but a couple of bands are ready.
Previously mentioned in this column are: Eggstone and
Dada Girl (SF). Added bands: Riders (with actress Eva
Rydberg's son Carl (can we start to see a pattern?), who
also caught the ears of Charlatans' manager when playing
at Hannas in Stockholm recently, and apparently things are
happening there), Halibut and Piles Gold (who had a
Charlatans-sound on their first demo, but a Simply Red
sound on their second one!). Bands who are on the way to
be included on the compilation (ie. not completely sure
yet) includes: Maelstrom (Stockholm), Bloober, Tightrope
City, Twigs (N), Coo (SF) and Lemonator (SF).

Harry Lime Records - latest compilation "A Twist of Lime" is also here! The
first copies arrived last week, and you can expect to
find it in the stores extremely soon (if not already!).

Lemonator - (Warner) have been mixing their debut album the last couple
of days, and everything should, according to the band, be ready
now! Though we will still have to wait until February to hear
the result. (Source: Scandinavian Indie)
Pimms - is a new band from Stockholm you will probably hear more about in
the very near future. Sounding similar to Suede and Radiohead with
Kent-guitars, they have caught the ears of record companies MCA,
EMI and Warner, and they will (the rumours say) be magazine Pop's
demo of the issue in the next issue (with a picture and everything).
The band throws a _showcase_ for the mentioned labels in Stockholm
at Tre Backar on January 31st. Check with the venue if you want
to know at what time they will play, as this was not decided at
this time. Related news - Dorian Records will release a single
with the band "as soon as possible", before one of the major labels
signs them, to avoid publishing/broadcasting/recording problems.

Red Sleeping Beauty - Siesta have moved the release date for their new
and upcoming album "Soundtrack" from January to
February, so it looks like we are going to have to
keep calm for a couple of additional weeks.

Sandy Lyle - have also pushed the release date for their debut CD5 "Rock"
forward a bit. The final mixing was made this week, and the
master has been sent to the pressing plant, which means that
the release lies about two-three weeks into the future.

I'm not sure "They" is the adequate word for a danish fanzine, but
thats what it is. Denmarks finest in indierock, sort of like a mix
between the swedish fanzines Sound Affects and Close-Up.
Good writers, lotsa lofi and hardcore, good fun if your into it.

Um, I wouldn't describe Gallon Drunk as folk-influenced. Not close,
really. They're kind of a psychotic blues. Their biggest influence would
probably be the Birthday Party.

I'd just like to let ya know that yesterday (Jan 7th) on german TV -- VIVA
TV was the alternative and indie music show 'WAH WAH' (it is broadcasted
every week = TU 23.10 and rerun FR 2.00 (all times in cet)) and
there was a video from finnish tekno/alternative dewd JIMI TENOR called
'take me baby' from 'take me baby' EP ---- I'd say it was a tekno tune.

it's ready on 95% = there's need to find some cool trax on decent quality

Huh???? I'm totally confused! Did the Finnish tape chain get split into 2
separate branches like the Swedish one? Kimmo assured me that I am #3 on
the tape chain, yet I *have not received it*, and you are saying that the
chain is nearly done except for these guys you mention above....so what
happened? Am I missing something here? Or perhaps losing my mind?? :-0
hmmmm....well I guess it'll all get sorted out...

It's actually a zine for fringe music.
Since there seems to be a reasonable group of people who want this tape i'll
tree it.... Now if somebody just tells me how i go about with this treeing
business. i've never done this before.
I almost got the new Pavement album "Brighten The Corners" 3 (three!)
months before it's release, but it didn't happen (aargh.) Pavement is
playing at Gino in Stockholm on Sunday 4/6. does anybody know when the
tickets go on sale? and how can i get my hands on them? (can i phone them or
something, and who do i phone?)
the new pavement will rock.

Nowadays Jimi does music that sounds to me like a bad prince impersonation.
not that prince would be any good either. the song that is on the tape
sounds at first like something from U2's Zooropa, but then it changes into
something indescribably cool.

Moshable is a Danish magazine, which has been going for 10 years, They write
about mostly undrground bands, Last issue was about: Mono men, Larry & the
lefthanded, Turbonegro, Hellacopters,, Hot Damn, Lazy Cowgirls, Teengenerate,
and short stories, coffee-shopping in amsterdam.
I don't know whats in the new issue but I know it's coming out very soon (it's
at the printers). They are also behind the record label "Bad Afro". we
"Beluga Music " try to help them sell their records. Bad Afro also have a
7"singes club: Coming attractions: Larry & the left handed (SF), The Nomads
(S), Isebel's Pain (SF), Submerged (SF), Cry/Mother Superior (S), Gluecifer
(N) 100 DKK/SEK/NOK will get you 3 hip singles. As they say at Bad Afro,
"Pushing Scandinavian Rock to the Man!"

Scandinavian Indie Review: This band with the cool name of _Bob_ comes from
Vimmerby, not far from here, and they have played together for about two
years, which means they started pretty early considering their average age
of 18-19. We have Johann (guitar & vocals), Wallman (bass), Lars (Guitar)
and Carlos (drums).
This their third demo, starts, strangely enough, with a three minute
_instrumental_ session before the actual "song" part begins. Pretty
interesting I thought when listening to it the first time, though pretty
risky, considering most people in the music business listen to the first
two-three minutes of a demo, and then turn it off. Anyway, this is perhaps
a good "live session" starter to play before the band hits the stage, to
continue with the non-instrumental part? Maybe a gimmick? Well, the second
part brings thundering guitar-walls behind an ever present lonely electric
guitar thread. Good vocals - always a plus, and a relief - a bit eerie,
kind of _Seattle_-style in its calmer habitat.
With _Dragshow Artist_..., the _Nirvana_ sound, musically, vocally and
lyrically (!), comes to credit. Musically due to the way the song is built
up, slow and calm intro moving towards the heavy guitar artillery and
chorus. Nirvana's 'Rape Me' comes to mind, for example. Vocally because
of the long, dragged-out vowels. Low, blurry Cobain-like vocals. And
lyrically it is pretty close to, just 'Rape Me' - "Fuck Me, My friend.
Blow Me, Again" is just one example. It is built up like the previous
song, second part, but it is way more thought through, and my second
favourite on the demo.
_Perfumed Christmas Cigars_ brings a beautiful single-string electric
guitar, bass and drums in break beat rhythm which push deep, low, silent and
addictive vocals right where they belong. It is an extremely beautiful, easy,
tapping-my-feet breeze in fact, which goes into guitar-wall heaven with a
twist, quirk, break, call it what you want, but it is utterly gorgeous.
Even if they had left out the guitar-wall parts, everything would still
be perfect, fantastic! Good lord, this is good! My absolute favourite
on the demo!
Coffee Ballerina is actually pretty uninteresting, considering the three
previous songs. Slow, simple parts going to guitar-walls and back, like
before, but here without any point that I can find. Maybe it is the wah-wah
guitar, maybe it is the whiney guitar. Maybe it is the strange lyrics which
says "slow-motion time, slow-motion day" - something I expected to find in
the first song on the demo, "Slow Motion Day", but it makes no sense here.
Then, to my surprise, I find _Porcelina Soul_ with two acoustic guitars
accompanying _Johann_'s story which he sings in a low, soft and sad voice.
And then, suddenly, _female_ vocals are added to the male - and what a
perfect combination! Yummy! Two beautiful, male and female, voices singing
"Hold me again, hold me my friend" and I recognize the girl's voice! But she
is not credited anywhere, not on the tape and not in the information sent
with it. A very beautiful and perfect end to the demo I must say. As I have
already picked out the first two favourites, this one would be the third,
though in the soft and beautiful music genre, this one is definitely first.

Well, if those two songs were played from the Finnish Tape that I
compiled (as I infered), they did play the long version, as I seem to
remember it was the one that I put on the tape. So there you go :)

I guess I should have mentioned, that all dates are not that certain.
Dates change and bands cancel. I just copied the dates from the
www-page. We'll have to wait for someone to confirm one of the dates for
now I guess.

I saw them playing 3 or 4 new songs from it at Pet Sounds last Saturday,
and they sounded okish I guess, though not exiting enough to make me buy
it.
Instead, I bought a (really cheap) second hand copy of Rumble City, Lala Land
(22-Pistepirkko). Really good. I only had Bare Bone Nest on tape earlier,
which is OK, though a bit silly at times. I've seen second hand copies of the
(fairly) new remix album too. Is it any good?

"Il trascurato" - as beatiful as "Happiest fool" or "Diesel smoke"

"Taramasalata" - just check out the intro
"Never been a better day" - eggstone goes Byrds, a song that's grown on me

"Birds in cages" - the critics seem to go for this one, better live
I saw them live at the "Nojesguiden"-party in Malmoe. Concert of the year.

Just a quick thought, probably the band is unaware of the absolutely
fab brittish band Bob which inspiered such wonderful publications as
"Smash Hit Wonder" and "Grimsby Fishmarket". Probably the best
fanzines to ever grace the counters of recordshops worldwide.
Bob played the jangliest of pop and I'd rank them way up there among
anorak legends such as the mighty Chesterf!elds and McCarthy. And
Kristina of Red Sleeping Beauty ranks them as the best band in the
World ever.
Hope this new batch of Bobs know what they're up against if they want
to live up to the expectations of their chosen moniker.
