hi,
i know this is a similar question as my last one about space but here
goes...
i keep reading about Slipstream, this amazing band who are supposed to be
tied to spacemen3 and spiritualized and were supposed to be the next best
thing...well, my question is, who are they and are they really any good?

Slipstream is great! It's the bass player or the drummer from Spacmen 3.
They do a great Kraftwerk cover of 'Computer Love'. I've got one album and
a bunch of singles that are way cool.

Ex-guitarist from Spiritualized I believe.

On second thought, they are not bad, but I was actually dissappointed
when I first heard it. It's rather nice, simple, guitar pop, sometimes
melodic, sometimes groovy. Buy it if that moves you.

I'm also quite sure that the connection is to Spiritualized rather than
Spacemen3.

Although it is an ex-member of Spiritualized and they are influenced by
Spacemen, don't expect another Spiritualized or Spacemen3 (except in
"pulsebeat", maybe), their sound is definitely their own.

Here is their website.

Mark Refoy who is mainly from Spiritualized is in Slipstream. They are ok,
but nothing special like Spiritualized and Spectrum.

I second that ... post anything and everything. I've looked through some

hey all,
I was wondering if someone could tell me what Third Eye Foundation was
like, and Loop. I am not sure if anyone else has mentioned it, but then
new Colfax Abbey is pretty nice, not what I expected at all. Anyone hear
about tour dates for them. Pretty cool band that experiements with
guitar noises/sounds and develops songs around it, kind of like
Spiritulaized in the writing process. Anyways, I found the old Bowery
Electric album(blue cover) in a store in Indiana and was pretty
disappointed with it, so anyone expecting stuff like the recent music,
don't buy it. Alright, gotta go.

1) Seefeel - QUIQUE (Too Pure) - excellent debut with lush flowing guitar
and dub beats, very much in the MBV "To
Here Knows..." vein
Seefeel - Starethrough EP (Warp) - the band makes the transition into
"intelli-techno"... GREAT!

2) Flying Saucer Attack - FURTHER (Domino) - great compilation to end phase I

3) Locust - TRUTH IS BORN OF ARGUMENTS (R&S) - dark, noisy techno-noir from
Seefeel engineer/collaborator
Mark Van Hoen

4) Spiritualized - LAZER GUIDED MELODIES
Spiritualized - PURE PHASE (both on Dedicated) - these are absolutely
MUST HAVE, LGM is more
rock, while PP is more in
sonic "glides and chimes"
ambient vein.

I hope this was of some help.

For Seefeel I would recommend "More Like Space" I would be happy to record
it for you. I have other as well...That's if you don't want to spent a
fortune like I did.

I also love Polyfusia, which compiles two earlier EPs.

You're think of Chorus, not Further. Chorus is definitely my favorite.
Further is more like acoustic strumming with guitar drones behind them. The
earlier compilation, Distance, is also cool.

I also love Pure Phase more than Lazer Guided Melodies. The latter seems to
be way too Velvet Underground derivative for my taste, even though the
Velvets are cool. Two totally different sounds between the two albums.

If you can find a copy of the live album, Fucked Up Inside, get it. It's
even better than LGM and PP.

SEEFEEL:

1. More Like Space ep
2. Quique
3. Succour

Try any of them, in fact try anything by them, all their
records are excellent.

FSA:

1. Distance
2. Further

Further specially is amazing.

SPIRITUALIZED:

1. Lazer Guided Melodies
2. Pure Phase

Both are the highest show of nowadays psychedelia.
"Medication" (on PP) is for me the "Heroin" of the 90s
You should try to get to their eps specially the Medication
and Feel So Sad eps.

Well, Silvania stuff is pretty difficult to get a hold of. A guy named
Daniel Sobus at http://grove.ufl.edu/~eleven/, e-mail: eleven@grove.ufl.edu
sometimes sells them via mail order. As for 3EF, try something like

entirely subjective forthcoming...

Seefeel - I would start with the warm, fuzzy, and looped of _Quique_.

FSA - lo-fi, spacey, droney, feedbacky and with an acoustic guitar poking
it's head in spots try _further_.

Locust - Don't have anything officially by them, but all illegal dubs tell me
that _Weathered Well_ is the one to begin with.

Spiritualized - ahh. _Lazer Guided Melodies_ for beginners, and then for
stage 2 try _pure phase_.

and since we're not on the topic of Slowdive again, I'll second everyone
else's recommendations of Bowery Electric's _Beat_ again. Hipster drum
sampled backup, with shoegazing ala Slowdive guitars with extra effects.
Wonderful expanding on BE's _S/T_ IMO.

Talking of Seefeel, did you all know that they've released a new album on
Rephlex (Aphex Twin's record company)? It was pretty low key and I only
found out about it by chance. It took me a while to find it but I've got it
now. To be perfectly honest, it's very disappointing. I can't even
remenber the name of it. When I'm next on-line I'll supply some more info.
It seems to continue their gradual fall from brilliance. 'More like space'
is still the the only record I've ever heard which I see as a real
development of the Slowdive sound. 'Climatic phase #3' is unbelievably
beautiful. But as time has progressed they've become increasingly techno
based and increasingly dull. The new album is farily uneventful I'm afraid.
Simple, one chord, one noise changes. It's similar to a lot of stuff off
Aphex Twin's 'Collected Ambient Works 2'. But if that's your thing, then
you'll probably be happy.

Bring back the 'Slowdivesque' chorus of guitars and two minute loops of
layered chorus. That's what I say.

Cheers,
Mark

It's called Ch-Vox and was recorded at the same time as Succour, which most
people have an aversion to also. They (not just *he*, importantly) are,
however, recording new stuff to be released this year.

I don't wanna knock this guy's opinion, but I encourage everyone to check
this record out for yourself. It's a deep dark minimal journey. Also keep
in mind that this was recorded BEFORE _Succour_, RePHlex shelved the master

Succour was definitely on the dark and anti-social side, but no less
brilliant. I guess for some it would take some getting used to, and
some haven't gotten used to it at all. For those who feel adventurous,
definitely check out the latest two records.

I don't think anyone has mentioned the seefeel or Mark Clifford mixes of
Cocteau Twins songs from their last album. I forget the names, but they
were quite nice.

Fair enough Mike. Maybe I'm being a bit tight. It just didn't really grab
me. I kind of see Seefeel as a lost Slowdive. I expected more than what
I'm getting.

I agree totally with 'sweet trip' who says:

Too right. More guitars, more layers and more textures. Maybe I'm just too
much of a Slowdive-head........

Mark Clifford mixed Feet-Like Fins, Seekers Who Are Lovers, Violaine,
Cherry-Coloured Funk.

In concert he did "Pitch The Baby", "Alosyius", "Wax And Wane"

which he has done superb job.

Yes specially the last track is really beautiful, the remix Mark Clifford
did for Silvania's "Trilce" -now 3lc- is very minimalistic and mindblowing
too, you should look for it on the Delay Tambor cd.

Umm.. I was sure that Ch-Vox was recorded after they left Too Pure and
before they arrive on Warp, so the evolution is: Quique..Ch-Vox..Succour..

I haven't heard Ch-Vox but since I love Quique and specially Succour -this
one is really a real gem, totally out of the material world, totally
hipnotic, it's extremely great!!- I supposs Ch-Vox must be another great
record.

"1Belm" is "Un Bosque en la Memoria" (my favorite off En Cielo de Oceano).
Maybe "Ry" is "Aura y Tu?" I haven't listened enough yet, but Delay Tambor
isn't doing much for me. Paisaje III, however, rocks my world. The first
tracks picks up from where Seefeel's _Quique_ left off.

hey there,
with all this talk about seefeel, i thought i would throw in my
two cents....
i was under the impression that seefeel split up... anything new
under the moniker is simply Mark Clifford on his own... the remaining band
members formed a new outfit away from the apparently egotistical Clifford
called SCALA....
scala has all the members of seefeel (except clifford) plus Mark
Van Hoen, the engineer of most of the seefeel releases (most especially
QUIQUE).... their debut release is called BEAUTY NOWHERE on touch
records..
it has all of the brilliant ambient melodies of seefeel, with a
new interpretation of the whole dark-dub vibe of older outfits like
massive attack and tricky.... it is far less "radio-friendly" than those
two artists though.... scala like to drone as much as seefeel....

all of this information is based on hunches, and stuff the guy at
the record store told me when i bought the album.... if anyone has factual
information about scala, send it to me OR the list...

That was the case for the later period Seefeel, which Mark then channeled
into Disjecta, but now the band has gotten back together and are recording
something for release soon.

I have their demo tape _Touch TO:29_, and to tell the truth, it kind of
bores me. It's got nice sounds and sarah's beeyooootiful voice, but the
songs just don't do it for me.

Does anybody know if _Beauty Nowhere_ is better than the previously
mentioned demo? Otherwise, I can't wait to hear the *real* new Seefeel....

actually, the songs on beauty nowhere were recorded over a period of
almost 2 years, between like '93 and '95 (or something close to that).
thats around the time of succor i believe. it was a side project...
probably an outlet for what the rest of seefeel (minus clifford) wanted to
do. (thats just me speculating.) its good by the way, diverse, dark and
very "concentrated"..err focused maybe.

seefeel didn't split, and have a new one in the works, or so i hear. scala
is suposedly working on something new too. im interested to see how a
proper scala album would sound, but i dunno, part of the charm of b.
nowhere comes from how all the songs were recorded months, or even years
apart, some at studios, some at home, and some on 4-tracks. if you have
the album, look at the song listing on the sleeve, every song says where
and when it was recorded.

In an attempt to start off what I hope will be a series of Slowdive tabs on
this list, here's my take on "Dagger."

Yeah, I know it's a simple song, but I'm a simple guitarist. (Btw, I'm
doing this during a study break at five in the morning! Writing a paper on
the role of habituation in formation of character in Aristotle's
_Nicomachean Ethics_. Yuck. I don't like Aristotle one bit.) Anyway, here
we go:

---------------------
Slowdive: "Dagger"
from _Souvlaki_ (1994)
---------------------

1. If you want to play along with the recording, tune the guitar a half step
down (yes, all of the strings).
2. Don't play the high E string at all during the song (deaden it with the
skin on your palm or something; be creative). Of course, it kind of helps
if you have a second B-string on the guitar in place of the E-string like I
do. :)
(That's how I'm going to notate it.)

DISCLAIMERS: I'm not even going to pretend to know the real names of the chords!
(EMaj7Dim4 my ass!) For melancholic use only!

B -0---0-- -0- -0---0---0
G -0---2-- -0- -2---2---0

E -x---x-- -x- -x---x---3

I. Verse
II. Transition (not sure about this chord)
III. Chorus

End on a C.

The arrangement is pretty easy, so I won't bother with that. Any comments?

Someone do "Machine Gun!" :)
