There seems to be an upsurge of people that send mail to this list
that would be much more appropriate if sent to the original writer.
When replying to mail, check your "to box". If it has the address of
the mailing list in it, remove it. Put in the private address of the
specific person that you are replying to. The only reason why I am
sending this mail is because 8 out of the 9 messages I got today were
just that. Messages that shold have been sent directly back to the
original writer. The 9th was someone that obviously does not know how
to subscribe to a mailing list. Thats my two cents worth.
Ryan (GGNL44A@Prodigy.com)

p.s. sorry for those that received this email more than once. I sent
it out to three different mailing lists that those 9 messages and
others in the past week have come from.

well, i guess it depends on what you want the effects for...in the studio, i
prefer a rack (a friend/ex-bandmate of mine recently got a pretty cool
digitech floor rack that had a few footswitches and a volume/wah pedal)
for playing live, i prefer boss pedals. i pretty much can get most of the
sounds i want from them & they're much more reliable than a rack, in my
opinion. also racks tend to sound a bit slick which is fine for the studio.

when i went out with neil after a slowdive gig, someone asked him & he too
preferred boss i believe...

Hello, I'm Ben from The Sunflower Conspiracy. We're two guitarists,
bass, and drum machine, and we use rack gear for the guitars. The
Bassist has four DOD pedals.

I have the Digitech Valve FX. It's basically an RP-10 in a rack w/ a
tube distortion section. I've noticed, however, that the switching time
between presets is less than on the RP-10. I love this unit. The other
guitarist, Barry, has an RP-10, but he just recently got a used
GSP-2101. That unit sounds great as well, and it is much more flexible.

With rack gear, I think he sound is usually more clear, even when it's
completely washy. Does that make sense? this is due to the fact that
with pedals, you almost have to always run them in series, and the sounds
just build up on top of each other. With rack gear, you have your choice
of series or parallel, and you can mix in between. For instance, if you
have chorus, delay, and reverb, you can route the signal so that the
chorused sound doesn't go into the delay, but instead goes straight to
the reverb, and the clean sound that goes into the delay, only %50 of its
output goes to the reverb. And when you run this in stereo, the sound is
usually wide open, severely effected, but clear.

Pedals and rack gear each have their own strength's and weaknesses.
Pedals are easier to manipulate, but harder to get many distinct sounds.
I've also noticed that pedals seem to work better with live and
loud/crazy drummers, but rack gear seems to work better with a drum
machine.

Anyway, I'd suggest that you (and anyone who's interested) test drive
each option thoroughly. If you want one or the other, and are in a toss
up, go to a guitar store and try out the best processor that you can
afford and would feel comfortable buying. Give it a whirl in a practice
room for about an hour, then give your pedals a whirl, and consider which
you like best and which fits better into your application.

Oh yeah, have fun!

you need a rackmount processor for some things, like massive reverb and
all those neato reverse effects (reverse gates, reverse reverbs). but
pedals certainly have their forte. you need a little of both

ben already mentioned that alot of
pedals can degrade the signal more than a processor. this is true.. most
probably because the signal is preamped, converted to digital, processed,
converted back to analog, and again amplified...FOR EACH PEDAL. a
processor converts to digital and then does everything, only converting
back to analog at the output.

Hey there,

For those of you looking to broaden your musical horizons a little, I might
suggest checking out the the STEALTH party that will be taking place at the
Warehouse (132 Quuens Quay E @ Jarvis) this Saturday (Feb 8) from 9:00pm
till 8:00am in Toronto. Tickets are only $15 and are available at all
Ticketmaster outlets until 5:00pm on Saturday. Tickets are also available
at the local independents and at the door for $20. This party is sort of a
"Ninja Tune" showcase featuring two of Ninja Tune Record's top artists.
Headlining the bill will be the very well respected DJ Food (London,
England) along with Ninja's newest sensation -- DJ Vadim (Russia). Also on
the bill is Canada's own Kid Koala (Montreal) who is featured on the cover
of this week's EYE magazine. The night will also feature the Toronto
talents of Jarkko (fucked up drum 'n bass), Lex (from Plus8 Record's LEGION
OF GREEN MEN) along with DJ Gnat, DJ Wig, Myka, Ashley and David Nunez. The
info line is (416) 812-6250 and this promises to be an evening of totally
original, tripped out, fucked up beats! If you aren't familiar with Ninja
Tune stuff, I can personally guarantee you that it is some of the most
interesting music being made today. Sort of an amalgamation of heavy
sampling, acid jazz and lots of drum 'n bass. It makes for a totally trippy
vibe of music that is both challenging and a lot of fun to listen to. As
Toronto's rave scene is headed back into the clubs (eg. Industry, Area 51,
etc.) you don't have to worry about this being a party for 16 year olds with
furry back packs on acid. This will be a real party for real party goers. I
hope to see some of you there! Cya at Stealth! :)

I'm sure alot of you out there may already know about this band, but I
just want to emphasize that every one should check out THE THIRD EYE
FOUNDATION. It's an absolutely wicked mix of drum 'n' bass and washy
distortion (ala MBV, Flying Saucer Attack, and of course Slowdive). Matt
Elliott, the man behind Third Eye, has also played with Flying Saucer Attack
and AMP.

Stuff to get:

CD/LP: SEMTEX (on Linda's Strange Vacation)
12": "Semtex" (on Domino)
CD/LP: IN VERSION (on Linda's Strange Vacation) remixes of FSA, AMP, Crescent
7": "Universal Cooler"/"I'm not Getting in the Car With You" (on Planet)

I think I've said enuff for now...

I use boss pedals for the compression/distortion stage (digital
distortion sucks) and use a FX500 for delay reverb and symphonic. Also i've
noticed that hollow bodied (semi acoustic) guitars give a better ambience
through all these effects than solid bodied such as fender stats etc.

I'm not trying to be rude, just informative. Plus you may already know
this. Most rack units don't have digital distortion. They usually have
a analog atage that does comp, dist, eq, and sometimes noise gate. Then
the signal goes through a/d converter, and it get process however you
wish with the digital effects (phase, flange, delay, reverb, tremolo,
detune, pitch shift, etc..) That signal then gets d/a converted in
stereo, and you can mix it with the dry analog to receive the wet/dry mix
you desire. This is at least how it works on most digitech
multi-effects. I know the boss VG-8 and some Rocktron products use
digital distortion, meaning the signal is converted to 1's and 0's before
any distortion is added.

Do you mean Silvania? They are a Spanish Slowdive-ish kind of band
apparently with albums Miel Nube Hiel, En cielo de oceano, Delay Tambor
and Paisaje III. I stil have yet to see anything here in the stores in
Toronto
on import. I think they are available from Hyperium though, but I could

I have had an RP10 for about a year and a half. you can get some really
interesting sounds out of it, though this takes some playing around with
all the possible things to modulate. a couple of problems i have with it
are that 1.) as said before, it takes a second or so to switch from
channel to channel 2.) when i use a lot of delay or other effects in
large combinations the machine overrides and the sound gets distorted and
cut off in a bad way, there's this awful red light beeping all the time, i
always wish i could push the effects farther 3.) its hard to play with
things in real time as with separate pedals, you can't spin and tweak any
tangible knobs, so for this i use it in combination with other pedals like
delay. but on the plus side you can get a nice base sound to fuck with
overtop of. but you might look into ones with more power... gage

The RP-10 is a rad unit for the money! Spend the extra money to upgrade
to the RP-10 or RP-12. It has more effects, more user programs, and a
more flexible foot controller section. Overall, it's a more complete
processor than the RP-6.

SPACE:
I saw them on 120 last night.
Kinda boring loungy almost but-not-quite latin feel. Kinda along the
same vibe as the cardigans, but different enough to make them sound
completly unlike that.

Last night I was thinking, "hmmm, SPACE, this could be cool." But by the
end, I was kinda just like mmmmmm.

But that's just their single.

Hello everyone,

I have placed two "special orders" for Silvania stuff through Elefant
previously. I will be doing a third sometime soon. I run a mailorder, but
for Silvania stuff, I have requested money up front, since Elefant won't
deal on consignment. If anyone is interested in ordering any Silvania
releases through me, please get in touch soon. Also, I have one copy of
Paisaje III that is extra that I can sell to the first customer! But for
anyone else interested, I will be doing the order. so just let me know.
Also, I have one extra copy of the Galax Trax 12" for sale right now.

The following stuff can be ordered:

-En Cielo de Oceano (more Cocteaus-like. Very "spanish-pop")
-Paisaje III (contender for one of the top 5 albums EVER! Combine the
previous album with Slowdive, Seefeel, etc, and you have a
masterpiece!)
-Delay Tambor (remix CD by the likes of Scorn, Seefeel, Locust, Scanner,
and some others. Also contains 3 Silvania originals.)
-Avolovara 7" (re-working of a song from Paisaje III and an exclusive
track. In gorgeous packaging. Clear vinyl)
-galax Trax 12" (more re-mixes by Vanguard, Prozack, Locust, and Silvania)

Prices are:

CD - $15
LP - $11
7" - $4.50
12" - $6.50

Let me know!

ed,
The RP-10, and the RP-5 have great effects, and you can layer as much
as you want without anything sounding muddled. However, I like stomp
boxes because you are more in control of quick timing sounds. They both
have their good and bad sides. The RP-10 has a wah-volume pedal, tons of
sounds, british guitar, surf guitar, all that jazz.
