This time I'm notifying you on a major problem we got into. Faster
then we expected, our storage capacity is not enough anymore. We
had to put some fileareas off-line in order to put some of the new
files, like mekka&Symposium'98, and TG'98 graphics areas. We are
about to install a new CD ROM on the board's computer to clear out
640Mb for temporary use, untill we'll get the new 6.4 GB hard drive
we've ordered. We have 200 MB offline at the moment, most of them
new files, as we have nowhere to put them without closing up the
upload space. We hope this problem will be behind us in a week or
two. We thank you for understanding.

---
I don't know what had happened this week to some of our users, but
we're getting quite an issue. DOC HOLIDAY made a WinAMP skin of CFX
with my little face int he bottom... :) Needless to say, the skin
is now in use on all CFX Team members' computers. Also, Gamover had
done a small nd simple intro 'bout us and I'm affraid to see what's
going to be uploaded next...

---
What does the scene holds for us in the future? How will our demos
look like in a year or two? Can you tell? Changes are happening all
the time. First, demos were allowed to cross the old 4 mb barrier.
Then, as was stated clearly in Asembly'98 rules, all coded products
(Demos/intros/4k) must be runnable under win95. At Mekka&Symposium
1998 releases I've found a demo based on MP3's (not a serius demo,
though). What's next? Will the music compo of Mekka&Symposium '99
allow MP3, like Rico "[mc]" Gloeckner from Germany thinks? Will
demos be allowed to excceed 6 or maybe even 10 Mb? And how about
new type of products, like interactive demos? I mean, Statix alreay
coded one, presented as Wierd'97 invitation intro, so why not? And
how about Active Diskmags ? Or a special library of effects, that
will sort of 'creat' a demo based on MUSIC? Then, the compo will be
whos' music will creat the best 'demo'! The possibilites are many,
and though I'm sharing with you ideas I had, some I even work on, I
still think there could be alot more ideas I can't even think of.

So, what will the future look like?

Send us your opinions. Send us your fantasy. Share your vision.

Some tips to Impulse-Tracker composers
------------------------------------------------------------------------
by Mystix

Hiya, howdy there...
Well... this is my first contribute to CFX news...
I really had no idea what to write about, so simply, to encourage some
musical action in the scene, I thought of some tips for new composers.
I am not such'a good composer, and not big expert using IT, but anyway.
My inspiration came from IT's attached hints.
NOTE : Some IT knowledge is required.

--- Samples

- While messing with samples, using of headphones is recommended.
- Collect some suitable samples for your song, try getting high quality
samples.
- something i tend to do, if you wish to, organize the samples by
types (drums, strings etc.)
- Choose then songs basic pitch, then tune all the samples to the same
pitch as accurate as possible. you should use the "+" and "-" keys
for fine tuning. play multiple channels using the "<" and ">" keys.
- Set each sample's volume using ALT+M. set the samples volume so that
the samples will be balanced, no sample should be too weak or strong.
again, use multiple channels to insure that samples aren't being
swallowed be other ones.

--- Instruments

- When using instruments which should sound real, you can take the same
sample in few different octaves, then assemble it into one instrument.
That mostly creates the illusion of real non-synthesized instrument.
- Change the New Note Action.
when using the default 'note cut' action, the instruments sounds
truncated. adding little 'note fade' will sustain the instruments
and fade it softly. that is much more realistic and sounds better.
- Try creating panning loops, Especially for long-lasting instruments.
Strings with static panning position sounds boring,
Adding a fine panning loop might make it sound right.
Using the Panbrello (Yxy) effect will have to do too.
- Whenever note do not use panning loop, at least create it a panning
position, and do not leave it on central panning.

--- Composing

- Create echo by doubling a row, and playing one row after the other,
using lower volume.
Try using volume commands on the secondary row, or changing the space
between the too rows, and you might get nice results.
- Cover the full range of sounds.
Do not put a lot of treble without any bass, vice versa.
You might wanna do it in special circumstances, like spooky part with
a lot of bass and no treble, but this mustn't be done frequently.
- Don't create complicated chords if you cannot do it right.
Creating complicated chords is not a simple thing, and doing it wrong
might cause your song to sound extremely bad.
If you can't create those, try using a simple notes which should
sound better.
- Avoid sudden pitch/rhythm change.
Try creating a nice transition between two parts.
That might be created by slow pitch slide, or by playing with the
volume.
- When composing the solo parts, you can use some temporary lite drums
to guide you through the right rhythm.

--- Generally

- Never rush making songs just for the releasing of it.
Release it only when you think it's done and good.
Of course you can release tones of songs, but composing songs made for
the fun of it, and to experience and improve yourself, not for fame.
- Compose the style of music you like to hear.
It should work the best, and prevent some headache.
Feel free to try new style as long as you think you like it.
- Select nice and suitable name for the track.
Choosing out-of-connection name might sound silly.
Close your eyes and listen to the song, then find out what does it
remind you of.
- When you come to a 'dead end', kinda feeling you can't find
continuation for your song, Don't delete it!
One day you will surely find a great continuation.

Mmm... that's it for today.
Feel free to comment me.

ÍÍ All-Israeli Demo ÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍ[03]ÍÍ

Making an All-Israeli Demo
==========================
by Kombat / Immortals

Hi there,

I don't usually write articles for cfxn, but this is an exception.
Once upon a time, there was a child..... many years later he grew up to
be a coder in a group with a name as stupid as Immortals :). After
watching the so called israely 'scene' diying infront of his eyes he came
up with a briliant or maybe stupid, vice versa, idea. The idea of a global
Israely production, something that will bring all the lost coders, musicians
and gfx men out of their cribs and join all of them together to create a
simply awesome demo.

The main idea of this Israely demo is that it will be made by tons of
people. Sounds like one big 'balaagan' ?, well, here's the sollution.
A staff, constructed from 5 people will monitor the making of this demo.
3 of them will be incharge of the selecting, monitoring and making of the
demo. One of them will be a coders, one will be a musician and one will be
a 2d/3d graphics artists. Another person will be incharge of the storyline
of the demo, he will be more of an art-director for the demo. And last but
not least (I hope so) someone to supervise over this group of 4 people,
monitor their progress over time, suggest, fix, etc.

The first process that will ongo untill the end of the demo will be
entries. Any person, which iseither a citizen of Israel or is a jew that
doesn't live in Israel. Since The palestinian Authority is now an undisputed
part of our fair country we will also accept arabic productions :)
All of the abov people will be encouraged to contact one of the 4 people
whoo's incharge of the topic he would like to contribute to. The definitions
of what can be send, how, when and why will be given in a small invtro that
I will do soon. Once your entrie has been checked with the appropriate person
it will be raised between all of the5 people and they will decide wether to
accept this entry or not, please don't feel bad if your entrie is rejected
you will recieve a full explanation saying why and you will always eb able
to apply again. People who will be chosen to produce the demo, and we will
try to make this a very large number of people, will be joined to the list
of producers as a coder/musician/gfx man. We will accept no extra stoyline
people since one is enough, although you can send in ideas for storylines.

This was more of a general perspecive of the new idea, what I'll try to
do now is the following : I am looking for 4 people to take the places of
the supervisors of music, programming, direction and graphics. please contact
me at :

Ohad Eder Pressman aka Kombat/Immortals/Taat98/62m
Tel : 09-7742244, 09-7712966
Email : eder@bigfoot.com, eder@shani.net, kombat@quackquack.com

If you believe you are an appropriative person for this task we will see
what we can do. I will take serious persons with prooved experience in the
specific fields. A global team will be concieved by the middle of next month
and I will release some invitation-demo for the creation of this wonderfull
demo. Just a few more words about the demo :

1. The demo will start with 'Israel presents'
2. It will include ALL the names ofthose who produced it.
3. It will not have rotation cubes with plasma mapped on them :)
4. It will be entered to a european party and most likely take a nice place.
5. This will not be in any way or another an immortals demo to all of you
who think so, I myself will not participate in it since i'm allowing
myself to take place as the main supervisor and most members of immortals
are busy with their bagruyot and our demos...

Cya soon,
Kombat/Immortals

Games evolution... is it?
-------------------------
by DNA Groove / MNH, Embryo

Everybody talks of Windows(tm) as a bad thing, the harm it's done to our
games/graphics industries. but did it do that much damage? or is it damage
at all? The story begins where most of you sceners were 4-6 years old, if
born at all. so don't feel too detached. :)

Let's take a stroll along memory lane, say back to the year 1985 or so.
Back then at that year i got my very first computer. 8088 PC/XT, 256Kb RAM,
12inch green monitor with two 360Kb floppy drives with no hard drives. Games
back then were the essence of computer power. and Windows(tm) was merely a
one idiot's dream that was dangerously envy of System 7. who ever thought of
coding or graphics had to do it someplace else. games were made fit to no
more than one diskette, 360kb. any game that had more than one diskette was
considered to be a masterpiece in the game industry. Color was not ment for
computers, thus effecting games and graphics in general. We had 4 colors to
cope with and by my standards it was only one color with four shades. :)
who could blame us for going to the arcade to have some fun with computerized
graphics and faked adrenaline. A year later some progress was made in the
area of graphic adapters for the PC machine. EGA they called it, Enhanced
Graphic Adapter. That "Enhanced" adapter introduced a revolutionary
resolution integrated with an overwhelming amount of colors (16!!!). It was
quite certain that it's the end for the arcade machines and that we are
confined to our homes and personal computers :). we were rediculously wrong.
The Video Graphics Adapter (VGA) was introduced a while later presenting the
wonderous standard of 256 colors, that held for quite some time. as wonderful
as those pieces of hardware were, they rarely worked with all/most of the
games/applications you had stored. And if they did finally work, they caused
horrific display/interrupt/software problems that could sometimes result in
damaging, thus changing, the entire PC machine.

"Standard" was a dangerous concept. the market contained dozens of models
of all kinds of graphics/video adapters with all kinds of capabilities and
compatibilities, ranging in price lower and higher than morality. very few
of those adapters were able to sneak in to a majority of house holds. Some
of those companies exist even today. ATI, Matrox, Hercules, #9 to name but
a few. In the year 1992, a revolutionary piece of software was presented to
the public, Windows(tm) 3.0 they called it. A graphical user interface
operating system (GUI OS). The earlier two versions were extremly buggy and
unseccesful to the point they were hardly heard of. this so called "operating
system" was actually another application working under the old mighty DOS
environment. One special element was emphasized and it's the official end
to the word "compatibility". If your piece of hardware worked fine under
Windows(tm), it'll work with everything else runnig under Windows. and so it
was. If you had an XYZ sound card, it worked beautifuly with every musical
demand the system had while working under Windows.

Years went by like crazy, Windows(tm) was getting the momentum of a
subsonic blizzard (hey, is that a killer name for a track or what?! :)).
More and more software companies emigrated to the new and revolutionary
operating system. The entire concept of Windows grew into enormous dimensions
until the year 1995. Windows95 got more media attention than almost any other
major event. It introduced a lame semi-32bit working environment with enough
bugs to fill the Dead-sea with. BUT, it had plug-and-pray. :) Even more
software and games companies started supporting Win95 only! Improved
Multimedia they say. Though the experienced among us new it's bullshit. but
is it? The same reactions got the EGA (scroll back, if you forgot what it
is). same adaption problems, same buggy software and hardware manipulation.
and yeah... same promises for a better future. BUT, EGA was given a chance,
and it evolved into VGA! the utterly ultimate standard of all times.

Windows offers even a better future than a few more colors or a bit higher
resolution. It offers a common language to ALL PC hardware accesories. there
was a time that everybody complained that the graphics are way too slow to
do anything watchable with. So was CGA (4 colors) at the time, but back then
people had the patience to dig underneath the visible hardware and hack their
way through the registered hardware limits in search of more speed and
general performance. When Windows came in handy, they expected it to do the
work for them, instead of studying what they shouldn't, like the good old
days. :)

Besides, with the new hardware offered in graphics (3Dfx) you can't
complain anymore that it's too slow for you. Windows, like it or not, is our
future. and the future must be accepted, not fought against.

comments in lingual format please.
have some more children if you may

How to Fake Creativity
<-+*+--+*+--+*+--+*+--+*+--+*+--+*+--+*+->
by Protopad of BSP

There seems to be a block in the Israeli scene's creativity. Our
recent demos have been a strange mesh of a basic theme and a corny
storyline. Maybe it's just me. But it could be that we are running
out of ideas. So here are some ideas to get you started. Some of
them might have been suggested and/or done before, but that doesn't
mean they should be ignored.

* A demo without 3D scenes, 3D objects or anything else which was
generated on 3D studio (MAX or not). Could be an intro.
Or you can use software generated objects and scenes: try to
generate a 3D beehive - it can be quite tricky. Read
Ranganathan's article "Pipe Generation From Arbitrary Shapes" and
see what you can do with it (it's in DemoNews 150).

* Take a famous song/poem/music you like. Make a demo out of it.
For example: William Shakespeare's Sonnet XVIII ("shall I compare
thee to a summer's day?") is packed with visual metaphors and
emotion - a feast to every demo designer.
I can also visualize a demo based on Dark Spirit's The Windtrap
(which is very good). I can just see desert landscapes using
voxel techniques, and the Windtrap itself would be a cool new
effect, but I am getting carried away...

* How about trying to DEMOnize a book? Take Stormbringer by Psyko.
Its quite good (could have been great, had it been more debugged)
and is conceptually based on Michael Moorcock's Elric of
Melnibon'e saga. Make a demo based on Tolkien's Lords of the
Rings, or the Silmarillion. Fantasy and Science Fiction
literature is a great source for demo storylines and themes.

* Optimize your 3D engine. I know it's not a very creative idea,
but it is a good one anyway.

* Try to properly merge 3D and 2D effects. Watch Fulcrum by Matrix.
It beets the crap out of Tribes in that respect, and it also has
a very good theme/plot/message/whatever. The 3D engine is not so
bad either, and it is based on Adept's and Borzom's sources! But
I am drifting again...

* Use a lot of motifs from the same source. For example, have a
Greek Mythology themed demo. Have of your objects be from Greek
Mythology: urns, pots and hydras. Make all your background
pictures and textures fit. Have pictures of gods, the Olympus,
centaurs, or Xena the Warrior Princess (who would look good in
any demo...). The textures of the urns should look like they do
on real Greek urns - a poorly drawn, two dimentional red and
black picture of Hercules fight the Nemeic Lion. The music should
have lots of flutes and feature a Pan's pipe. This kind of demo
would be good even if you don't have good 3D scenes with people
fighting hydras or complex multilayered 2D effects. Of course, if
you do have those things - you have a truly great demo which will
be remembered for eternity. Just don't forget me when you are
rich and famous.

I truly hope that some of these ideas will evolve into full working
demos. That will show them Europians who's the boss. And then we'll
sacrifice a goat!

I am writing this article for cfxnews#30 thanks to Civax you has given me
a chance to write alittle about my new art board. 'Sarkazm' bbs is a art-
based version of a warez bbs run by natureboy, and is sysoped by me,ganeza
and natureboy. The bbs has some amazing artworks by the best artists that
can be found from israel, and the world such as phony eye, martz and alot
of others. When you call, you can expect to find the new'st artpacks of
all kinds, art-related e-mags, programs and news. Sarkazm currently has
huge ansi/ascii/emag/lit file conferences, and we are working to develope
our music file conference. We are also connected to a international art-
related mail net called 'CyberCrime International' which allows us to be
connnected and updated with the international art scene happenings.

I would like to take adventage of this chance and write abit about what
i'm doing besides running Sarkazm. I lately opened a new art group, and
i'm gonna keep running it until people get inspired by it, and start
more and more art-groups. Our first release should come out in the next
couple of days, so check it out. I have also started working on a
israeli art-scene related electronic magazine called 'Cocaine', and i'm
already collecting articles so you should expect to see it very soon.

To get more information about any of the things i talked about, or just
check out the bbs, call 0350-666-13.

Purple Skies
by SiK
May 4th, 1998
-------------

The elevator opened, and a tall, good looking woman came out of it, carrying
a large briefcase. She walked rapidly in the hallway. The Argon light tubes on
the ceiling managed to light her face from now and then. The only sound that
was heard were the heels of her shoes, tapping on the floor as she walked. The
hallway stretched for about 20 meters. The woman finally reached the metal
door, which had the number "9" glowing above it in a faint red light. The door
opened silently, revealing a large room. She walked inside, passing between
tables, many faces staring at her, silent. She reached the end of the room,
put her briefcase on the blue metal table, then turned around.

"Good morning Mrs. Miles", said the 29 children altogether. "Good morning,
children", said the woman. "Today we'll learn about ancient history - people,
traditions, everything. Yes, Angela? Yes, I know it's the 12th, YOU DON'T HAVE
TO TELL ME THE DATE EVERYDAY, OK? THANK YOU!". The teacher turned to the board
and wrote on it the date: "March 12th, 2308". "Oh, darn", she mumbled,
searched her briefcase for a while, then put a single holo-chalk inside the
holo-pen.

"Ok, children", started the teacher, "Today we'll talk about ancient
history, that means the period between 1989 and 2032. That era was called long
ago 'The Computer Age'. We now call it 'The Years of Great Insanity'. People
who lived then had many worries and problems". The pupils were amazed. How
could someone be worried? Or have problems? The teacher continued. "Do you
remember, from last week, the Great Leader Bill Gates? Well, before he caused
the 4th World War, where Britain was destroyed by his fearsome commando
lawyers, Bill Gates had merely begun constructing his gigantic empire. He came
up with a program called WINDOWS. Nobody knew then that Bill Gates will become
the President of the U.S.A., the United States of America & Canada of today.
This program had many subliminal messages in it, which told the users to vote
Bill Gates for president. This program, which didn't even run on a 80386,
spread...", the teacher was interrupted.
"What's an 80386, Mrs. Miles?", asked Ray.
"Hmm...", the teacher thought for a second. "Well, a 80386 was a very
primitive computer. Imagine yourself something that is even slower than an
I6PC 12 Giga-hertz computer. 600 times slower". The kids started laughing.
"Anyway", the teacher continued, "this program spread amongst the people like
a fire storm in Jupiter, and when the election day came, Bill offered himself
for president. He got 86.19% of the total votes".

Mrs. Miles stopped for a minute. She sipped from the cup that layed on the
blue metal table, then looked outside the window, while the pupils copied the
holo-diagram from the gray metal board. The weather was stormy, as usual, and
a group of nitrogen clouds floated above the far red mountains. The clouds
were purple. The reflection of the red colors with the dark blur atmosphere
caused this... A couple of shuttles flew outside slowly, scanning the
landscape with a thin ray of white light, probably looking for Resistance
people. This was a bad weather to fly, but they didn't have much choice. Since
the new order on Earth, the Mars Government had to obey too. We haven't yet to
form an army, to rebel against the evil Leader of Earth. If he will find out
that the Mars-Resistance is smuggling weapons from Jupiter, he will send his
forces to kick the living Mars out of us. In the meanwhile, we must all obey
the order of the Great Gates. She sighed quietly. "I wish there was a way to
leave Mars", she thought. "Things are quite bad here... Not until winter,
anyway, and the winter will come in about 300 days... Only then space-crafts
come to Mars to deliver goods. I cannot wait 300 days! Perhaps if someone on
Earth will replace Gates, maybe then Mars will be free..."

Billy wasn't paying attention to the rest of the lesson. He opened his
holo-notebook at its last page. "Hmm... WINDOWS", he thought. Then he picked
the holo-pen and slowly wrote 'WINDOWS' on the page. The letters were glowing
in a green light. Billy began thinking. Thoughts were running in his mind with
incredible speed. He disconnected from the class. He began seeing things.
Letters, numbers, words, instructions, programs, users, people, weapons,
blood, DEATH...

The long sound marked the end of the lesson. Billy got up, packed his things
and walked out of the class. He headed straight home, instead of going to his
regular appointment at his psychologist. Well, the thing is, that Billy was a
megalomaniac psycho-delusional demented person. But it wasn't dangerous. At
least not now. Maybe in a few years. Until then, Billy went every week to his
psychologist. But now, overwhelmed with the concept he thought of, Billy
rushed home, threw his things on his bedroom floor, and sat near his computer.
The door slam shut, and the human-liver that was hung on it fell off, and made
an ugly stain on the metal floor. The proximity sensor turned the computer on
as billy put his hands over the keyboard. "Hello Billy", said a sexy female
voice (Billy taped once Mrs. Miles' voice when she greeted him on school, then
passed it on to the computer). He loaded D++, then started coding. He wrote as
a maniac (in fact, he WAS a maniac). Billy didn't go to school the next day,
or for the next 3 months...

"...and managed to beat the Chicago Space-Bulls with a score of 119 to 87.
And now, for some sad news: a space-craft from Earth which travelled to Mars
yesterday, revealed a horrible sight - ALL of Mars' residents, I repeat, ALL
residents were lying DEAD on the planet surface. It appears that all of them
just broke through the protection domes and walked outside without protection
suits. As far as we know, NO ONE survived. Several police squads were sent to
Mars to reveal the cause of this mass-suicide, only to discover that EVERY
computer on the face of the planet was operating some kind of software, called
NEW-WINDOWS. A thorough examination of this software detected subliminal
messages, telling the user to break through the domes and step outside. It
also appears that this program was operating for about 3 years, causing
everyone on Mars to view the subliminal messages, and at the exact date, break
altogether through the domes. Our condolences. The president of the U.S.A.C
met today with the head of th...", the television went off.

The house was dark, and the red mountains were clearly seen through the
thick glass on the wall. There was a peaceful silence. Outside, there was
silence too. 8 million people were lying on the planet surface. They didn't
have much to talk about, since they were all dead. The skies were purple, and
the nitrogen clouds turned orange. The sun had almost vanished behind the
mountains, and still casted a few rays on the clouds. This was the most
beautiful sight Mars has ever seen. Billy stood against the window. He sighed.
Then turned around and sat on his bed. "I hated school anyway...", he said.

42 - Ths 64k was suppose to compete at Mov'97, but since
(by Immortals) was the only 64k contribution, there wasn't a compo.
I wouldn't call it the most awsome 64k on earth but
it is surely worth a watch.
[IMR_42.ZIP (74k) Support: Immortals]

CFX Winamp skin - I'll risk of looking selfish for onc, but this is a
(by Doc Holiday) great skin for WinAMP, regardless it's a CODERS F/X
skin n' that it got a little pic of me in the bottom
:)
[DOC!AMP.ZIP (80k) Support: Doc Holiday art]

Fulcrum - This is a great WOW demo! It is mostly 3D, but what
(by Mystix) an engine.. What a story.. This thing looks like an
animation demo for a game or something. If you have
not seen it yet - leave everything and just do.
[FULCRUM.ZIP (6,106k) Party: MekkaSymposium'98]

Win'98 crushes live - This is a small .MOV file that records one of the
most embaressing moments in Microsoft history...
Live on CNN, Bill gates is showing how to install
a new device on Win'98, when it suddenly CRUSHES.
