hello ben,
thanks for writing..i too love slowdive/mojave 3...their music is really
beautiful....it just does something that completely mystifies me....right now my
friend is in russia (as an exchange student) so i have all his slowdive imports
and singles...they are so good..each slowdive cd sounds different from the
next....their music never ceases to amaze me...i know very few groups that can
play so many different styles..and so well....well anyway....nice to hear from
someone...a good slowdive song is shine.....
-i am also a fan of the verve...i also have all of my friends verve singles...i
would have them myself..but my friend beat me to the local record store (tower)
that actually had singles not on the top 100....well talk to you soon...

well, I'm always happy to get any list going a bit:)
Well, do any of you people on the list know of anywhere that I can get a
complete history of slowdive.
If you look at a band like the cure, for instance, you'll find numerous
detailed resources because there are so many people obsessive with the cure.
Now, I guess that I'm kinda like that with Slowdive. But I really don't
have that many resources. I'm pretty much stuck in a midwestern city
(indianapolis) that is large, but it has no underground scene. Everything
is classic rock, alternative, or country, and even the cool indie record
store can't get the Slowdive stuff for me.
Are there any books on slowdive?
Is there any way I can get a hold of their videos?
Any photographs?
I've been to the few web pages that I could find, but I guess that I just
want more!!
oh well, has anyone been in any bands that have covered slowdive.

its sad to say, but all of slowdive's stuff on SBK is out of print. they
are selling JFAD for $25 and Souvlaki for $31 in my town, and these are
domestic prices. Its really a shame that such an amazing band will not be
heard by those not already listening to them (unless they reissue, and I
doubt EMI will do that).

I had much the same reaction as Jo when I heard Mojave for the
first few times. I almost didn't buy it cause I was worried when I heard
the description from a friend. But I too came around. I wish it were not
quite So "western" sounding. But all in all I think it is a big step
forward for 'em. There is a new level of complexity there and they are
STRONGER songs. I think it would have been nice for then to get hooked up
with someone other than 4AD, I think IVO etc. have been the kiss of death
for many a good band. Feel free to argue with me here.....

greetings, salutations, and all that other lovely stuff...
i'm patricia...i am eternally grateful that such a forum exists for the
discussion of slowdive & its new incarnate (i've not yet been able
to find "ask me tomorrow" on anything but vinyl)...goddess knows it's long
overdue :{. living in san francisco, one would think that their music
would be easy to find...
well...my love of slowdive tends to lie primarily with the earlier
recordings--the eps and JFAD. [BTW: photon boy--JFAD & souvlaki are still
available at regular domestic prices here in california--which is probably
little consolation.] souvlaki is also dearly loved, but it seems to have
an entirely different (rougher?) quality to it...pygmalion is (and please
don't virtually kill me for this) still difficult for me to swallow--the
swirl & distortion that i had loved so much was abandoned. it has taken me
quite some time to come to like the songs i do like on that recording
(miranda, cello, visions of la, blue skied an' clear).
as for prosaic bits: i'm 21, a junior psychology major/human sexuality
studies minor at san francisco state university (and have great trouble
staying awake in class). other bands i love: cranes, electrafixion,
echo & the bunnymen (i'm a very infrequent poster to the seven seas email
list), tori amos, dead can dance/lisa gerrard, chimera, blind mr. jones,
(early) cocteau twins...and more i cannot think of at the moment.
this was intended as a introduction of sorts but i digressed...anyhow...

Since no one in this state (which one?-you ask) of Ohio seems to recognize
Slowdive there are many copies of the above two floating around. So, if for
any reason someone on this list does not have the above two and wants them
(and furthermore cannot find) I would be willing to pick them up a copy.

yea, I picked up mine at the local "Media Play" superstore type place the other
week actually for only 12.99 each. I had noticed them there for a while before
I picked them up. they only had one of each (now they have none). I would
certainly tend to agree about people, in my part of Ohio anyway, not knowing
much about who they are. I don't recall ever hearing a single song on any
radio
station here (oh yea, I'm refering to that consertive bastion of Cincinnati).
Whoever is selling them for that high a price is really making a killing on
profit.

i'm working on "allison" - i've got about half of it now. i'll post it
whenever i finish (assuming i *can* finish it). i think next on my wish
list will be "avalyn."

Just a little idea i had today. since we're all friends here, wouldn't
this be a good place to exchange/help each other find slowdive things
without milking us for $30 for a bloody EP. Some of the more
geographically challenged of us, have a real hard time finding anything
from slowdive, so if somebody say stumbled across a copy of holding our
breath in a used bin and they already had it, they could post it here, or
at least let people know about it.
Another thing, don't let anybody leach you for the morningrise EP. I just
got mine for $9.99 CDN, and saw 3 copies in HMV in toronto. YOu can still
order them, and they are NOT out of print. And Slumberland records has
the take me down/beach song flexi for $2.50. I got taken for $15 from a
certain guy, so don't fall prey to these vultures on stuff like this.
In addition, a store in Toronto has slowdive t-shirts. e-mail me if you
want the address/phone number, they do mail order and they are not that
costly.

Hiya!
I have had trouble finding a copy of Pygmalion, believe it or
not. I looked here in U-C, in Seattle, and in Santa Cruz (the
last two trips I've made out west). Can't find it! I know I
could break down and order it from a local record store, but I
am lazy. I am not familiar enough with the details of Slowdive's
last album on (what was it, Creation?) that label. I hear it
didn't sell well, so I was fearing it might be generally difficult
to come by. My apologies if I am ignorant of such important
knowledge. :)

Hello, fellow shoegazers....it's the first time I've writen to one of these,
so please bear with me...I have been an avid fan since the first time I heard
"Waves" broadcast over some college station in Santa Cruz when I stayed
there in '91....in any case, I hope that the supposed tour that I've been
hearing and reading about wityh Mojave and Lush together will actually be
happening. I also wanted to know if any of you have any stuff by The
Charlottes, Bleach, or Moose...I've been trying to find some stuff by them,
but to no avail...I know these aren't Slowdive or Mojave...but... they are
great just the same. I've all of the Slowdive albums, but I've yet to acquire
the coveted Blue Day collection, and the early EP's. On another note...me and
my friends formed a shoegazing outfit called Mesmerized about three years ago,
and if anyone is interested in getting a tape off of us, e-mail me at
avina@uclink4.berkeley.edu and I'll see what I can do about getting you a
tape.

hey...
im sending this post to several lists hopinf for a response...
i am an ameteur filmmaker. I make mostly silent films, with what i'd like to
consider an influence of rouben mamallion (early film interpretation of jeykll
and hyde), wim wenders and william wyler, among others...my question is...im
really wanting to put a music score to the films...does anyone know the
prcedure for getting permission to use copywritten music in the score...i
noticed that the most recent greg arraki (sp) film featured every band i've
ever loved, and i wondered how exactly one would assemble such a cast...any
suggestions, ideas advice is welcomed...

The history-section of the Slowdive Discography (v1.9) (in case you haven't
seen it) looks like this:
Long-term school-friends Neil Halstead & Rachel Goswell formed Slowdive
in October 1989, the name, Slowdive, coming from a dream Niel Halstead once
had. According to an interview in Alternative Press, he dreamt of two words,
Slowdive and Slowburn. At first they were a highly derivative My Bloody
Valentine/Sonic Youth clone, but even their first demo reveals a better
understanding of controlled noise than most of their contemporaries. In
their defence the 'demo' was really just them recording for fun, and it
wasn't until early in 1990 that the band became Slowdive proper with
their own ideas.
The major change was the addition of third guitarist, Christian Savill,
previously of local act Eternal. "We advertised for a female guitarist,
but only Christian replied. He writes a sweet letter though, he said
he'd wear a dress if neccesary". The songs on the second demo show a
leap forward, while previously they headed towards a climax of noise,
'Avalyn' was a gentle steady flow of nearly white noise. It's this demo,
passed on by another Reading act, Swervedriver, that brought Slowdive
onto Creation records and became the first single, as attempts to
recreate the atmosphere in a more expensive studio failed.
Problamaticaly between recording the demo and signing to Creation their
drummer left for University, and they were forced to draft in a replacement.
He didn't share the same aims and tastes as the group, and they didn't
really get on with him, making time on the road a little uncomfortable.
More importantly "He had a shaggy perm, he looked like Jon Bon Jovi" so
he was replaced by the bowl-cutted Simon Scott, of the sadly deceased
Charlottes. Simon later left Slowdive on good terms in February-March 1994
to continue his career in jazzy circles and was replaced by "the immensely
handsome and talented" Ian MacCutcheon before they went on their 1994
north american tour, which they paid for themselves since SBK Records,
their U.S. distributor, who had promised them an extensive tour, went
out of business.
My Bloody Valentine have been directly relevant to their use of guitar
sound. The Cocteau Twins and The Byrds were big influences too. They
worry about the build them up/knock them down syndrome, complaining that
the British press expect revelations with the first record, while bands
like the Cocteau's & MBV have taken years to achieve the respect they
have. The problem has probably been caused by the string of excellent
debuts by Pale Saints, Ride, Bleach and Slowdive themselves creating an
expectation that the best music will come from previously unknown bands.
Slowdive have been perhaps particularly lucky with Melody Maker giving
them single of the week for all their releases during 1991, and a reviewer
at NME giving them the same accolade as he felt the review printed the
previous week was unfair.
Slowdive was the first band featured by Creation on IRC on february
2nd 1995. In one of Slowdive's newsletters, they wrote about a planned
cover of Galaxie 500's "Fourth of July" for a tribute album, that was
going to be released by Elefant Records in Spain. To my knowledge, the
album was unfortunately never released, and probably never will be,
at least not including Slowdive, beacuse the band was dropped by Creation
shortly after the release of Pygmalion, April 1995.
This affected the release of Pygmalion in the U.S. and the band started to
look for a new label. Rumors said that Rachel and Neil sent a demo to 4AD,
which got a positive reaction from the label. And that happened to be the
truth. Rachel, Ian and Neil formed the band Mojave 3 and were signed to
4AD in the summer of 1995 (for that story, please check the Mojave 3
Discography). Rachel Goswell said: "After that ("Pygmalion"), Slowdive
didn't so much split as take a shift in direction, one that a couple of
the other members weren't comfortable with. It didn't seem right to carry
on with the same name, we needed to get a fresh start and all the pieces
fell into place for us to get one.".

Hi,
I am severely geographically challenged, and because of this, I don't get
cable where I live. We do have indoor plumbing and electricity but that's
about it. That means I ne'er get to see videos, which is generally a good
thing. Although, I would love to see any videos from Mojave and Slowdive.
Does anybody have any of these on tape or anything? I would love to have
them, as well as my bloody valentine videos. If somebody could tape them
for lil' ole me, I could give them monetary compensation and my undying
love.
also, is anybody planning on buying the new ride album? has anybody heard
it yet. i usually don't give bands another chance once they put out a bad
album, and i'd be as likely to buy a new album from ride as i would
another "coming" of those pesky stone roses. i'm actually curious to hear
what they have done in their times of turmoil, and fanbase backlash to
carnival of light.
yet another thing, sometimes i go for weeks on end listening to nothing
but slowdive and my bloody valentine. anybody else have these episodes?
