Note from the Editor
--------------------

Welcome to another edition of the Sound Newsletter. We are now
publishing a new issue every two months though special issues
may surface if necessary. I am pleased to announce that Randall
Abel is on board as a MOD specialist. His column will appear in
every issue and it will contain the information on the latest
MOD players and latest revisions. His Modplayers list has become
THE source for all avid collectors. Editions of his list have
been included in past issues and will periodically be appended
to the sound newsletter on a quarterly basis.

As many new CD-ROMs hit the market the Sound Site CD-ROM continues to
fare well. Containing near 1400 MODs and 500 MIDIs it remains one of
the most complete collections of MOD files and is still available at
the price of $15. That price includes shipping and handling to
ANYWHERE in the world. See CD-ROM.INF for details. If you are a
software author or a writer of MOD/MIDI/669/etc files please contact
us on how to have your work appear on our CD-ROM. Our purpose is to
provide a huge collection of files for the enjoyment of everybody
thus unlike other CD-ROMs priced in the $30-50 we are prices well
below that at $15.

Would you like to see a new column, write a column, answer questions...
The Sound Newsletter is always looking for additional help. We are
also looking for ASCII artists.

** NEW DMP LIST ANNOUNCEMENT **
*********************************
by Otto Chrons (c142092@cc.tut.fi)

A new list was created specifically for discussion and announcements
about DMP. The new list is called DMP-TALK, and will also be served
by listserver@oliver.sun.ac.za. Comments and questions about DMP can
be sent to dmp-talk@oliver.sun.ac.za. DMP-LIST will continue to be
the distribution list for new versions of DMP.

To subscribe to the new list, send
subscribe dmp-talk your-name-goes-here
to listserver@oliver.sun.ac.za (subject is ignored).

To unsubscribe from a list, send (eg.)
unsubscribe dmp-talk

to the same address. When subscribing, please use your name and not
your e-mail address, since the system gets that from the mail headers.
If you have trouble subscribing or unsubscribing from the lists, send
a note to listmaster@oliver.sun.ac.za and NOT TO THE LISTS!

Here is the list of DMP-related lists available:

DMP-LIST:
This list is for distributing new releases of DMP and PMP quickly to
people who want to have them fast, and for those who don't have access
to FTP distribution sites. If you do have access to these sites,
please don't subscribe this list, because it adds unnecessary overhead
to the listserver machine. If your machine can't handle big postings
(bigger than 64Kb), please don't subscribe to the list.

Note: This list is read-only, so you cannot send messages to it. Use
the DMP-talk list instead.

DMP-TALK:
This list is for any DMP related discussion. New releases will also be
announced to this list, so if the DMP-list volume is too much for you,
this is the list to be on.

DSMI-LIST:
This list is for DSMI users for asking questions, when they encounter
problems using DSMI. Anyone on the mailing list can answer to these
questions, not only the authors. DSMI list will also be used for
distributing information about DSMI bugfixes, new releases and also
tips for using DSMI.

** MEDIA VISION JOINS INTERNET **
***********************************
By Media Vision (TECHSUPP@MEDIAVIS.COM)

Attention all Media Vision Enthusiasts!

The following is a comprehensive list of official sales and support
methods for Media Vision. Recently added to this listing are the
European and Australian numbers, as well as the much awaited
TECHSUPP@MEDIAVIS.COM mailbox.

What this is:
Media Vision has assigned Technical Support representatives to answering
your Technical Support questions. Send a brief description of the
trouble that you are experiencing, along with some information about
your system that you have the Media Vision equipment in, and the OS you
are running under, as well as any other helpful information you can
provide to help them to help you in solving the problem. They will
get back to you as promptly as possible (answers have yet to go over
48 hours, excluding weekends).

There will soon be a mailback system implemented to provide manual
installations, technical information, sales information, and press
releases through a mailback system. This is under construction, and
should be available within a few weeks.

We will make another posting as this comes on-line.

There is also an unofficial FTP site at FTP.UWP.EDU in the
/pub/msdos/proaudio directory of drivers and utilities for those
of you who want to get them across the internet.

This site is not maintained by Media Vision, but by friends of Media
Vision and proud Media Vision owners who get the drivers from The
Media Vision BBS and Compuserve and provide them via FTP through this
site.

Media Vision will be soon introducing their own "official" FTP site to
the internet community to further serve our customers with drivers and
utilities for their Media Vision products.

Without any further delay, I present you the ways to contact Media Vision.

** MOD Charts : February 1994 **
***************************************
by Oliver Bellmann (oliver@math.uni-muenster.de)

Modcharts can be found via anonymous ftp:
ftp.informatik.uni-rostock.de (pub/amiga/mods/charts)

From

Hello Friends!
Welcome to the MODCHARTS, edition FEBRUARY 1994.
Due to some problems with AMINET sites I cannot guarantee that you will
find the charts on -every- AMINET site (Wuarchive had some harddisk
problems).

So if you experience problems with some sites, please get the charts
directly from FTP.UNI-MUENSTER.DE (/pub/sounds/modcharts). The charts
will be there. I know this for sure, because I'm directly sitting on
this site : -)

Please send me VALID votes. Just vote for the MODs of the places 1 to 10
and the four newcomers. All other votes have to be rejected, sorry.
Please read the textfile "MODCHART.FAQ" for further information if you
are new to this (and you still don't understand how to vote : -) ).
I hope I explained all the things there. If not, please let me know.

That's all. And don't forget to vote as soon as possible.
pump up the volume... dance!

Please send this vote to OLIVER@UNI-MUENSTER.DE or
OLIVER@MATH.UNI-MUENSTER.DE
*** DEADLINE: February, 28th 1994 ***

Seeya on the boards,
Oliver (a.k.a. HITMAN on IRC, #modcharts)

Q: MODCHARTS? What's that?
A: MODCHARTS is a compilation of the fifty best MODs of the month.
This top50 appears each month and is available all around the world.
All you need is a computer to play these songs (normally through a
so-called "MOD-Player")

Q: How does it work?
A: You (the "voter") will download the MODs from your nearest server.
Normally, there are 14 MODs (the places 1 to 10 plus four newcomers).
You will listen to these MODs and put them in your favorite order,
sending this order (i.e. this vote) back to me. Sometimes, you may
not vote for a MOD, because it stayed in the top ten for six months
now. (See below for further explanation of this "6-month-feature")
I will analyze all incoming votes and calculate the new top 50.
You see, it's working like a radio top 50. :-)

Q: But the list shows a top50. Why are only the places 1 to 10 and the
four newcomers available for downloading?
A: That's right. Only the current top ten is available (plus the four
new ones). Uploading the whole top 50 would cause some chaos,
especially on the BBS's. In your vote, you can (must!) propose at
least three newcomers (please see the section "MODs that I would
like to hear next month" on your vote-sheet). The "lower part" of
the top 50 (i.e. the places 11 to 50) consists of the MODs which
have been in the charts before. This part may help you to find
some proposals for the next chart's newcomers. Of course you
can propose other MODs which are not in the top 50.

Q: I can only vote for the songs given in the current chartfile?
A: Yes, please take only the 14 MODs from the current edition of
MODCHARTS (thats place number 1 to place number 10 and the four
newcomers).
Please do NOT vote for the MODs on the places 11 to 50!
Don't send me any "private topten" or own compilation.
In addition to that, your vote has to be "complete": Please fill
out ALL the 10 places. Don't give me just your "favorite five"
or something like that. I can only accept "full" votes.

Q: So how can other MODs enter the charts?
A: via the "newcomer section". If you are having a favorite MOD and
this MOD is not currently in the charts, you can propose it as a
"newcomer". There is a section in the vote-sheet called "MODs that
I would like to hear next month". Please put your suggestions there.
If you don't know any, you can look through the places 11 to 50.These
MODs hit the charts in earlier times and are still hot...
The more voters propose a special MOD, the earlier this MOD will
appear in the next month's edition of the charts.

Q: How long does a MOD usually stay in the charts?
A: The time for a stay is limited to six months to provide some "motion"
After being officially introduced as "newcomer", a MOD will stay up
to half a year in the charts (it may drop earlier, sure).
After 6 months, it has to quit, but it can be easily brought back by
proposing it as "newcomer" again. Normally, there will be a question
at the end of the vote-sheet if necessary, just as
> MODs that I would like to hear next month:
> already.6.months.mod (yes/no)
> a)__________________
> b)__________________ <- your own proposals
If at least 50% of all voters want this MOD back, it will become a
so-called "re-entry" in the next month's edition of MODCHARTS.
Thus - theoretically - a MOD can stay in the charts till eternity,
but it will have to stand the test each 6 months :-)

Q: When and where does the new chart appear and how much time do I have
to vote?
A: The new MODCHART edition usually appears in the first week of the
month. (please read the textfile "modchart.sites" to find your nearest
server/BBS). Depending upon my luck in uploading the charts and the
internal distribution delay of AMINET (normally 16 hours...), the new
charts will be available at least on Monday of the 2nd week. The
dates for other servers or BBS'es may vary. The textfiles (the top
ten, the FAQ and the site map) are also uploaded to the NewsNet.
Current groups are
- comp.sys.amiga.audio and comp.sys.ibm.pc.soundcard.
Please do not post your vote to the NewsNet!!! Send it directly to
me! Deadline for your vote is the last day of the current month.
The deadline is also given in each month's edition of MODCHARTS.
Just cut off the "vote-sheet" from the text of the current MODCHART
edition, fill it out and send it back to me via e-mail.

[Sound Newsletter readers due to our publishing schedule we recommend
you sign up to the MODCHART mailing list to vote for future charts]

Q: Well, I don't have Internet access. :-( How can I send back my vote?
A: Probably you got the charts from your friend (who has an Internet
access). Your friend may "pool" all votes of the Internet-access-
less users (:-) ) around and send the votes back to me, packed
together in one file. If you received the charts from your local
BBS, then send it back to your BBS (your Admin knows what to do with
your vote :-) )

QUICKSTART:
1) Read the file "modchart.sites" to determine your nearest MODCHART-SITE
2) Log in on that site (anonymous-ftp-server or BBS)
3) Download all textfiles ("modchart.month", "modchart.faq",
"modchart.sites") They may have changed, so get them ;-)
4) If you participated last month, goto 6)
5) Download the places 1 to 10, if you don't have them already
6) Download the four newcomers, if you don't have them already
7) Listen to the 14 MODs
8) Fill out the top-ten on your vote-sheet (thus four MODs will drop)
9) Propose three (or more) newcomers, either newly discovered MODs or
some MODs of the places 11 to 50
10) Send your vote-sheet back to me (email) or to your BBS

That's all folks. Party on...

* New version of Ultra Tracker (version 1.40 to version 1.50)
- now you have 8 octaves (added 5, 6 and 7). You should use the
higher ones (esp. 6 and 7) only on samples, with a high
sampling rate. Low rate samples may sound wrong or "different".
- you can now load 4/6/8/16 track .mod, .669, .far, .mtm and .ult !
- increased the speed of the playback-routine (about 30 times faster)

* New version of VangeliSTracker (version 1.2b to version 1.39b)
o GUS (Gravis UltraSound) support. In fact, the only card
supported in this version. See also the new VT-GUS section
of the configuration file VT.CFG
o New video mode: now the screen turns into a 90x63 text mode
that gives a much bigger playfield to fill up with
uninteresting things. :) Use Ctrl+Arrow Key (left or right) to
adjust the horizontal screen position if the default doesn't
fit well with your monitor.
o Vastly improved S3M support. Now it sounds almost as good
as STMIK; in fact, it will play PANIC.S3M and WATER.S3M
(inside FISHTRO.EXE) much better than the ripped STMIK 0.9. :-)
Some details still missing, tough.
o The decorating menu has finally disappeared. Maybe some day
it will see the light again.
o There's a mouse you can play with. It doesn't do anything,
but you may move it with the rhythm of the music and have
some fun. It's basically a functional substitute of the
previously mentioned menu, as are some sliders drawn next to
the VU-meters. :-)
(available on wasp.eng.ufl.edu in /pub/msdos/demos/incoming dir)
NOTE: Since this version is GUS-only I have decided to keep both
versions in my MOD Chart.

* New version of WOW II (version 2.00 to version 2.30)
Now supports GUS cards. Has Jump-to-Dos. Various other changes.
(available on archive.epas.utoronto.ca in /pub/pc/ultrasound/submit

New Spectral Oscilloscopes
--------------------------
Version 2.0 can display "real-time" spectral oscilloscopes
when recording and playing sounds. These scopes are generated
by using fast Fourier transforms (FFTs) and can be configured
to show 128 points or 256 points of detail.

New Editing Features
--------------------
With GoldWave, you can perform accurate editing operation
on sound files. Multi-file cut, copy, and paste operations are
very easy to use because GoldWave automatically converts data to
preserve pitch and tempo. An Undo feature has also been added to
reverse a previous operation.
Direct editing allows you to zoom in and change individual
samples with the mouse. You can even "draw" new wave shapes.

New Export Command
------------------
The export command allows you to convert a sound from one
format to another.
.WAV Standard PCM, Companded MULAW, Compressed MSADPCM
.VOC Sound Blaster files (8-bit mono)
.AU Sun mu-law, 8-bit signed, 16-bit signed
.SND Raw (or NeXT) files, including:
signed or unsigned
8-bit, 16-bit, or mu-law
byte swapped
mono or stereo
.MAT Matlab files (16-bit signed/unsigned or double prec.)

New Device Controls Setup
-------------------------
The Device Controls window has been redesigned to display
two oscilloscope for stereo sounds. Many new features have
been added including looping, fast forward, and rewind.

Educational Tool
----------------
By using both the expression evaluator and the oscilloscopes
together, GoldWave becomes a great teaching aid for topics such
as spectral analysis, Fourier transforms, and digital signal
processing.

** ANNOUNCING QSEQ MIDI SEQUENCER ** *NEW*
**************************************
David HAUBENSACK (hbsk@hostsit.cad.cea.fr)

Here is the first release of a MIDI sequencer called QSEQ. It has been
designed to be quick and easy to use, with a lot of useful and friendly
features. I wrote it originally for my private use, but friends of mine
like it too, so you should give it a try. It is already available via
anonymous ftp in louie.udel.edu:/pub/midi/software/ibm . If you don't
have access to ftp, I can email it to you uuencoded and split.

Here are its main features:

- PC compatible, with MSDOS 3.0 or greater. A PC-AT286 is enough.
- Support the SoundBlaster Pro MIDI interface.
- 80 x 50 text display, using direct video memory writing for speed.
- Highly secured and reliable MIDI playing kernel, totally independent
from the user-interface activity (I worked for this!).
- Two recording modes: overwrite preexisting material or append.
- Punch in/out while recording.
- Recordable tempo change.
- 40 tracks, with many real-time parameters for each track, including
selective MIDI events filters.
- Each track contains up to 16000 MIDI events.
- Each track can be looped a given number of times.
- Time resolution is 1/192th of a beat.
- Each track is individually mutable or can be set to solo mode.
- Powerful graphic manipulation of tracks and beats (copy, cut,
paste, paste-over, join, transpose, etc...), thru a buffer.
- Powerful graphic edition of any MIDI event in a track (notes,
control changes, aftertouch, bender, program changes, tempi, etc...).
- Tool to smooth continuous MIDI events variations and to filter out
useless events by linear interpolation.
- Tool to create MIDI events by linear or curved progression.
- Sysex capabilities.
- Info screen to memorize useful information about a sequence.
- Real time visualization in hours/minutes/seconds/hundredth of seconds
- Load and save MIDI files or QSEQ format file.
- Easy manipulation of files and directories using browsers.
- Metronome click on the PC speaker or thru MIDI.
- And many others features that I hope you'll like...

Files provided in the QSEQ package are:

- QSQ.TXT : the documentation.
- QSQ.EXE : the QSEQ program itself.
- TEMPLATE : an example of template for the INFO view.
- WHATISAY.QSQ and WHATISAY.MID : sample music file under QSEQ format
and standard MIDIFILE format. I'm not the creator of this example
I found on the net. I just modify it to make it an obvious example.
Thanks to Ray Charles. I am giving this MIDIFILE, not selling it,
so please Ray, if you read this (ooops excuse me!), don't ask me
for any money... ;-)

OK, read the documentation carefully, with QSEQ running in front of
you. As a first test, type "QSQ WHATISAY". You may edit program changes
by typing 'V' and then press SPACE to play.
